ONGC, SC Railway win in ‘Babu’ Hockey

ONGC Delhi defeated UP Hostel 2-1 in a thrilling encounter of the 27th All India KD Singh ‘Babu’ Memorial Invitational Prize Money Hockey Tournament at the Dhyanchand astro-turf stadium, Kursi Road here on Thursday. Both the teams resorted to an aggressive game from the word go. Amarjeet sounded the boards on behalf of ONGC through a penalty stroke in the 17th minute of the play. In the 64th minute, M Fahad consolidated the lead further. Dribbling past defenders intelligently, UP Hostel’s M Javed scored a goal in the 67th minute to make the score 2-1. Thereafter, UP Hostel tried a lot to level the scores but it was too late to make amends.South Central Railway, Secunderabad defeated STC Lucknow 5-1 in the second match of the day. SC Railway’s, Prabhakar Singh broke the ice in the 8th minute of the play. However, Sanjay Pandey, made full use of a penalty corner provided STC in the 13th minute to level the scores at 1-1. In the 36th and 41th minute, Amit Kumar scored goals through penalty corners to make the score 3-1 in favour of the Railway.

Now Lucknow loses a chance to host Senior National T-T as well

The controversial Sports Act-2005 seems to have taken its toll once again. Strained relations between the sports associations and the state government, have once again deprived the sports lovers of the state capital to witness a prestigious sports event taking place in the city. The sponsors are not ready to risk money in sports events being held in UP.Earlier this year, the Inter-State Cricket final could not be held in Lucknow following refusal of the state government to give ‘Babu’ Stadium grounds for the same at the eleventh hour on ‘flimsy grounds’ following bitter relations between the UP Cricket Association (UPCA) and the UP government. Now it is the turn ofthe 68th Senior National & Inter State Table Tennis Championships for the year 2006-07 which were supposed to be held at Lucknow from January 8 to 14 January. The UP Table Tennis Association (UPTTA) was given the privilege of organising this prestigious event by TTFI. The sponsors are just not ready to ‘risk’ money in the present situation.According to hony. secretary UPTTA Arun Kumar Banerjee, “The UPTTA had started making necessary preparations for organising Senior National Championships quite a few months ago and has already spent a substantial amount by way of advances to various parties. We had applied for the booking of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Stadium, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow but were shocked when we received a letter from the RSO, Lucknow in September that we have to deposit Rs 1.44 lakhs for the booking charges of the stadium, as earlier it was free of cost for conducting the National Championships.”“Under the present circumstances we were already facing a lot of problem to find sponsors for the championships as many fear that the State Government might cancel the stadium booking at the eleventh hour and thus the sponsors do want to risk a huge amount.”“We have been left with no other option but to express our regrets, and in this situation UPTTA has decided not to conduct the Senior National Championships at Lucknow in January 2007”, Banerjee further added.
However, Regional Sports Officer, Lucknow RP Singh, when contacted said, “ The UPTTA had sent a letter in September stating that they wanted to know the cost that would be incurred for the booking of the multi-purpose hall and hostel rooms at the Gomti Nagar Stadium. So we provided the required information to them in September itself. Nowhere in the letter had the requested free booking for the purpose. Venues are given free of cost for such championships but only after a request letter is received in this regard.”“Any recognised association who accepts the Sports Act and is duly affiliated with the Sports Directorate, can request for the facility and we then provide it free of cost,” he further added.Reacting on this matter the UPTTA secretary informed, “We had applied for affiliation with the Sports Directorate under the Sports Act 2005, but as a matter of fact, we have accepted the certificate from the government. There are strong instructions from our national federation and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) not to adhere to the controversial Sports Act. So even if we pay the amount, the championships will be withdrawn from our parent body. Moreover, we fear, that since we are not accepting the Act, therefore, like cricket, the table tennis event too would be forced to be postponed at the last minute. What it is the guarantee that if we pay the money, the booking will not be cancelled just a day before the event as had been done with the Inter State Cricket final in March this year?”“Today morning I have officially conveyed to the TTFI that under the present circumstances, we are unable to organise the event. The tournament involves a total buget of around Rs 35 lakhs which comes mainly from the sponsors and the sponsors are not ready to risk money in the present scenario.”

IAF, SAI squads triumph

INDIAN Air Force (IAF), Delhi defeated Andhra Pradesh 3-0 to collect full points in their day’s match of the 27th All India KD Singh ‘Babu’ Memorial Prize Money Hockey Tournament in progress at the Dhyanchand astro-turf stadium, Kursi Road, here.
On behalf of IAF, J Kujur broke the ice in the second minute of the play. Sanwar Ali consolidated the lead further in the 14th minute. Dodging defenders skilfully, Manoj Kannaujia netted a goal in the 50th minute to pave the way for a 3-0 win for the team.Sports Authority of India (SAI) XI defeated SAIL Academy, Rourkela 6-2. The SAI team resorted to a highly attacking game. Though no goals could be scored for a major portion of the play due to a strong defence exhibited by both the teams, however, SAI forward Shashikant managed to break the ice in the 31st minute of the play. SAI’s Kulbhushan scored a goal just two minutes later. As if this was not enough, Shashikant netted two more goals—- in the 41st and 43rd minute to consolidate the lead to 4-0. SAIL Academy forward Roshan Minz brought down the margin to 4-1 in the 54th minute. However, Shashikant scored a goal in the 61st minute to make the score 5-1. SAIL’s Amir Hayat scored a goal through a penalty corner awarded to the team in the 61st minute. But by that time, it was too late to make amends and SAI’s Yadvir Singh sounded the boards in the 66th minute to pave the way for a 6-2 win for the team.IAF’s Sanwar Ali and SAI XI’s Shashikant were declared man-of-the-match, in their respective matches. The prizes were sponsored by Hutch.

Vi-reined! IHF does it again

Another one bites the dust. Well, almost. The 'official' team list for the Asian Games was released by the Indian Hockey Federation on Saturday. And, as expected, they managed to include a shocker by dropping midfielder Viren Rasquinha. After a short match between the players and a few fitness tests late on Friday at Gurgaon, the selection committee decided to select Gurbaj Singh instead. Nothing special about it, except that both Viren and Gurbaj had been part of the preparatory camps in Rourkela for almost two months. But it was only on Friday night that Viren was declared 'unavailable'. That too, without a valid reason."There is no reason, the trials were held yesterday and we decided on the team. It was a collective decision," said coach V Baskaran. IHF secretary K Jothikumaran reiterated the 'collective decision' theory for dropping Rasquinha. "There is no injury," he admitted, but added: "It was a combination of two factors, both form and fitness, that made us take this decision."Surinder Singh Sodhi, one of the IHF selectors present at Gurgaon, also said that Viren was not in top form, adding that he had been given enough chances. Another selector said that Viren had always been injury-prone. "He needs to be rested after every 15 minutes," he said. Interestingly, when the team arrived from Rourkela late on Thursday, the coach had insisted that there would be no 'selection trials,' only a last-minute confirmation of fitness. So much for consistency!Viren, however, asserts that he is fully fit. "I have done five sets of fitness tests, I have passed them all, and the authorities can make the results public if they want. I have been given no reason for being dropped and I was told about it only this morning," he said. For someone who has been an integral part of the senior squad since 2002, this is nothing less than humiliation. And Viren is understandably upset at the whole charade. "It is not about dropping Viren Rasquinha. This is not the way to treat any player, more so someone who has given his 100 per cent for so long," he said.Viren is a player whose commitment had never been questioned in the past. Even his worst critics admit that the Mumbai player is one of the most hardworking in the Indian squad. But he is also one of the few who have retained a certain dignity and self-respect. After being dropped, there are indications that he may retire from international hockey, though he remained non-committal."I don't know. I need to talk to my parents; this is not an easy decision. But I will announce my decision in a day or two, one way or the other, at a press conference," he promised.Joaquim Carvalho, his coach at Indian Oil, said the decision was "simply stupid". "I don't know how they suddenly decided he was not fit. Now we are going into the Asiads without a genuine centre-half."This is not the first time the IHF has gone about putting down a player in such a callous manner. Having all but announced that Dhanraj Pillay would not play for India after the Athens Olympics, the living legend was played for a total of two minutes in India's last match. More recently, asked whether Deepak Thakur could return to the team, IHF president KPS Gill was honest enough to say that he did not foresee this in the near future. With Viren out of the Asiad, the squad that had a dream run in 2003 is all but finished. But then, that's how the IHF works.

Rourkela boys learn from exhibition hockey match

India XI defeated the Rourkela XI by 4-2 in an exhibition hockey match played here today. The match, a part of the preparatory hockey camp for the coming Doha Asian Games, saw the national team beating the local outfit. The Indian XI drew the first blood at the initial stage as striker Tushar Khandekar scored a field goal. Within five minutes, captain Dilip Tirky scored the second goal from a short corner. And the goal line remained the same till the breather.
Soon after the breather, the Indian team scored another goal through Ignace Tirky. However, the local outfit counter attacked and scored two quick goals, much to the delight of the crowd.
Dilip Kerketta of the Panposh Sports Hostel scored in quick succession.
In the dying minutes, the Indian scored again through Tushar. Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Mr Satyajit Mohanty, the DIG of western range, thanked the coach of Indian team Mr B Bhaskaran for having agreed for the match.
Later speaking to this reporter, Rtd. Brigadier Sidiqui of Army Sports Institute, who is also accompanying the team at the request of the IHF chief, said: “The team did not go full throttle to avoid any kind of injury before the big event and we were also seeing what more could be done with the team.”
Dilip Tirky said: “The match will certainly help the local boys and they would certainly benefit from the match and as per our preparation we are taking care of our problems that we found nagging us in the World Cup and they are saving the short corners and scoring from it.” The surprise package of the match was the presence of Sandeep Singh, the drag flick specialist from Punjab, who was injured in an accidental gunfire before the world cup.

Rourkela plant excels in current fiscal

Rourkela Steel Plant registered a sterling performance during the month of October, coupled with an outstanding performance for the period April-October of this fiscal year.In October, RSP registered their best-ever performance for any month since its inception. The sinter production reached a record 2,93,150 tons during this period. And the hot metal production rose to an impressive 1,96,458 tons along with the crude steel production soared to a new high of 1,79,022 tons. The total hot rolled coils touched an incredible 1,62,302 tones and the saleable steel (total) reached an unprecedented 1,95,191 tons.
These outstanding performances in October contributed significantly in enabling the steel major to register their best-ever production as compared to any April-October period since its inception in sinter (1.76 million tons), hot metal (1.24 million tons), crude steel (1.16 million tons), total saleable steel (1.12 million tons) and dispatches of saleable steel (1.10 million tons). The best-ever production levels for April-October was also achieved in hot rolled coils, plates from plate mill, hot rolled plates and cold rolled non-oriented (CRNO) steel.
Rourkela Steel Plant, began the fiscal with the objective of maximising its volume of production (by surpassing rated capacity) and improving process parameters for bringing down the cost of production to enhance its profitability.
All the major production canters of the steel plant operated at an unprecedented level of capacity utilisation of more than 115 per cent during October 2006 and consistently more than 100 per cent during April-October as well.
With this the steel plant is poised to comfortably surpass the annual rated capacity of 2 million tons of hot metal for the first time. Simultaneously, efforts to improve process parameters have brought about significant improvement in coke rate per ton of hot metal, specific energy consumption per ton of crude steel, total metallic input in steel making, lining life of LD Converters etc. thus reducing the cost of production. This has enabled RSP to register the highest net profit for any April-September in its history, as per the unaudited accounts of the company adopted by Board of directors of Sail.

Only Take, No Give Corporates need to do more for the region from..................

Corporates need to do more for the regions from where they draw their raw materials
In 2001, ASSOCHAM’s president said that dialogue alone could solve the challenges Naxalism posed. As many as nine Indian states are bearing the brunt of Naxalism. Of these, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh are the worst-affected while Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are partially hit. Andhra Pradesh and Bihar remain the hotbed of cpi (Maoist) operations.Naxalism has been able to take root in socio-economically backward areas where there is rampant unemployment. Most areas where Naxalism flourishes are rich in natural resources that are utilised by corporate houses. For instance, Chhattisgarh’s economy includes the Bhilai Steel Plant, balco Aluminium Plant (Korba), NTPC Korba and se Coal Limited. However, the benefits of such activity have failed to reach the indigenous inhabitants.Naxalism, on the other hand, has afflicted the economies of these regions on many occasions. For instance, in June 2006, Maoists began a two-day economic blockade in Chhattisgarh as part of their countrywide agitation in protest against the anti-Naxal Salva Judum campaign in Dantewada district. In May 2006, suspected Naxalites set ablaze four trucks and construction equipment belonging to a Jamshedpur -based firm near Ghorebandha, former Chief Minister Arjun Munda’s hometown in East Singhbhum district for failing to pay a levy demanded by them. The firm, Vashnavi Construction, had bagged a Rs 6-crore contract for an aqueduct of the Swarnarekha Irrigation Project near Ghorebandha. Construction came to a standstill since the incident.Although industry has often been in conflict with locals in Naxalism-affected states — there is the instance of January 2, 2006 when tribals protesting their displacement from a tisco site in Orissa’s Kalinga Nagar were fired upon by the police, resulting in the death of 12 persons. Some corporate houses have tried to engage in community-building to help the local people. Public commentary on Naxalism by corporate leaders or industry associations is not usual. In one of those rare instances, during the continuation of talks between the Andhra Pradesh Government and Naxalites in Oct 2000 amidst an air of scepticism, the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) and the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry said that the process should continue. Mahendra K. Sanghi, assocham president, asserted that “dialogue, dialogue and dialogue alone” could solve the problem. OP Goenka, President of the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry, too felt that the process should continue. “It is very important to continue the dialogue,” said Goenka. On the positive side, SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant has adopted 36 tribal children of the Chhattisgarh region and is providing free education, boarding and lodging facilities. SAIL has established academies for handball, hockey and football at Bhilai, Rourkela and Bokaro respectively in a joint venture with the Sports Authority of India. These academies have produced national, Commonwealth and SAF champions. The National Mineral Development Corporation’s Bailadila projects in Chhattisgarh extend free medical facilities available in its project hospitals to local tribals. Project doctors are regularly deputed to visit the interior villages with para-medical staff and medicines to provide medicare. Free medical aid, both out-patient and in-patient, is provided to scheduled tribes residing within Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district in project hospitals. The company deputes project doctors/staff/vehicles to actively participate in all eye camps, pulse polio immunisation programmes/family welfare camps organised by the district administration for the benefit of adivasis. While Naxalism is a complex issue, it is reasonable to assume that an engrossed development regime entwined with corporate initiatives committed to employment and real betterment of the local populace will help ease tensions.

Foreign coach’s appointment depends on results of Asian games

Admitting that the standard of Indian hockey has deteriorated during the past few years, President of Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) K P S Gill today revealed that appointment of foreign hockey coach could be considered after assessing the result of Indian team's performance in the forthcoming Asian games.
“No doubt that standard of Indian hockey has deteriorated but IHF was doing efforts to revive it and even appointment of foreign coach can be considered if we do not perform well in the forthcoming Asian Games” Gill, who was here to witness national hockey championship, told reporters. However, Gill hastened to add that due to financial crunch in IHF, it could not bear expenses of foreign coach as on now.Gill cited the reason of lack in new talent in hockey, as lack of Astroturf in the country and said that now talent could not be improved by playing on grass ground.“In case of Punjab, which was known as nursery of Indian hockey, new talent was lacking due to unavailability of required number of Astroturfs. We should have at least one Astroturf in each district to get back the status of Punjab in hockey”, he added.
Media always raise query that why Indian hockey was deteriorating, he said replying that lack of Astroturf in the country was one of the main reason for deterioration of the game.Gill revealed that in the current year itself, 14 more Astroturf would be built in the country and IHF has planned hockey academies at every place, where Astroturf would be developed.Asked his reaction that he was pointed out by several hockey players and even former coaches for ruining the Indian hockey, Gill, while getting agitated said “I am not responsible for answering any baseless statements. If Indian hockey is not doing well not only I, but all are responsible for the same”.
“If one is really concerned with hockey, instead of criticizing us, he should come to support us in the time of crisis. Those who do not love hockey start criticizing the IHF baselessly”, uncomfortable Gill said when asked to comment on the allegations against him by former coach Rajinder Singh and former Olympian Pargat Singh.“If Pargat Singh really loves hockey, why he does not promote it in Punjab, as now he is holding the prestigious post of sports director of state”, Gill said while pointing back the finger on Pargat.“No doubt that we have to realize that why Indian hockey team did not do well in Olympics for long time and certainly find out the reason why it happened”, Gill said while complaining that incentives given the sports were withdrawn by various agencies.“Now various departments have changed their recruitment policies and it was just few public sectors enterprising like oil sector, banking sector and airlines, which were coming to support hockey, if these should have not come forwarded, Indian hockey would have completely ruined”, he added.About the blue print of IHF to develop Indian hockey, Gill revealed that talent hunt campaign was being launched in all over the country, apart from Punjab, which has turned into just a “pond of Indian hockey with a few frogs”, the players were being traced in all over the country, he said.Even during the on-going National Hockey Championship, IHF selectors were watching the talented players and some of them would be sent to Rourkela soon to participate in the tournaments, where final selection of players would take place. He revealed that incoming March, Indo-Pak hockey tournament would be held and at least four to five matches would be played in each country like last year."Even IHF has started sending Indian players to the countries like Holland, Germany and Spain and this year as many as five players will go and next year number of players will be increased to 10”.He said that the Indian hockey team in world cup suffered a lot due to sudden injury to star hockey player Sandeep Singh and the suffering might continue in the Asian Games too, as Sandeep would not be able to participate in that too.
