UTKALMANI GOPABANDHU INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING
The Institution is located in the Industrial Estate on the foot of a hill (District - Sundargarh, Orissa). It is about 8 K.M. West of Rourkela Railway Station and half K.M. from the Main Road, near STI Chowk having a peaceful academic environment. Rourkela is 415 km from Calcutta, on the Calcutta - Bombay main line, and 340/483 kms from Bhubaneswar by Road.
BRIEF HISTORY
The Institution was started by Government of Orissa under the Industries Department in the Year 1962 and was named "Composite Polytechnic", Rourkela. In the year 1966 the name was changed to "Rourkela Polytechnic" and again in 1968 the institution was renamed "State technological institute", Rourkela. Subsequently in the year 1976 the name was changed to Utkalmani Gopabandhu Institute of Engineering , Rourkela (UGIE).
The institute is located in the tribal belt of the state of Orissa and was to cater to the needs of Rourkela Steel Plant along with other industries of the State. It was the only institution in the Eastern India imparting Diploma Engineering in Chemical and Metallurgical branches of Engineering. The institute got another feature on its cap by introducing Ceramic Technology in the year 1995 for the first time in Eastern India.

The institute offers Engineering Diploma course in the above disciplines of three years duration divided in to six semesters each of six month duration. Admission to the courses are on merit basis based on HSC or its equivalent marks and for ITI students too. Counselling is done centrally for all the Diploma Engineering Institution of the State.
